my favourite bits of the royal day

I can't help being British at heart.  The wedding has left me with a pleasant sort of fuzzy feeling inside.   If I had to pick out three highlights of what was a very beautiful day and a seamless show, it would have to be the:

oak trees inside the abbey - BRILLIANT!

the drive in the eco-friendly Aston Martin

and DEFINITELY the church dean's cartwheels down the aisle of the Abbey!!  LOVE IT!!

Don't bug me!

Sometimes I stumble upon strange designs which reveal some relations to wildlife...

Looking at that chair I was uncomfortably reminded of a bug or perhaps a chair of medieval torture quality...

I hope you are all sitting comfortably!
Happy weekend!

The Royal Wedding.

Kate and William tied the knot!  Were you inspired by her beautiful Alexander McQueen lace gown or the Royal Wedding?

Interior design and fashion often collide.  Each takes inspiration from the other.  And, what inspiration might we take from the Royal Wedding?

The beauty of lace is utilized in this modern spare bedroom.  An overscaled modern lace design is used as an accent wall behind the low profile bed.  The focus is on texture and line in this almost all-white space.

Beautiful frilly white lace and crystal combine to create a truly feminine retreat.  Fresh and etheral, this room looks angelic, just as Kate Middleton did on her wedding day.

Without the use of color, this pure white bedroom remains stimulating through the use of various textures and finishes. Delicate lace is juxtaposed with a rustic whitewashed headboard and modern slick white saarinen table.  The look is breathtaking!

An all-white bathroom mixes glistening white mosaic tile and a dazzling crystal chandelier with white matte walls and a textural window treatment.  Who said stark white was nothing more than plain vanilla?

Inspired by the British flag, these accessories pop against the crisp white background.  They're fun and cheerful and assist in creating a lively and energetic space.

The British flag is red, white, and blue in color, combining the Cross of Saint George, the Cross of Saint Andrew, and the Cross of Saint Patrick.  This avant-garde dresser, taking it's inspiration from the British flag, is fresh, vibrant and eye-catching.  It surely wouldn't go without notice in any room!

This may be taking British inspiration a bit too far!  While it certainly is dramatic and colorful, I'm uncertain as to the longevity of a sofa with such a theatrical gesture.  When you want to make a statement, don't be timid!  Then again, maybe a simple pillow could suffice.

I'm sure we'll be seeing images of the best dressed guests and their show-stopping hats for days to come.  Did anything inspire you?

Design Influences..

I know I don't do a lot of talking here on the blog but believe me I am a chatter... you might be glad when I go back to short and sweet...

I have been thinking this morning about design and how I am influenced.
There are certain designers that I love- they can almost do no wrong.  But I must say that I am influenced by just about everything.  Everything we see effects us in some way or another.  I can always pick out what I like or don't like in a photo or a room but I don't always realize the more subtle things in everyday life that influence me.
Like light and nature that is a big one for me... I love the light in the morning as it hits the trees just outside my office window. It is soft and just that perfect color it makes the trees look fantastic..  I don't like those trees that much otherwise.

Things like that go unrealized for a long time and they effect us in how we live our lives and how we see things.  Little things like that color or that feeling flow into design and help shape design decisions.

I know I am rambling - but it is Saturday and I suppose it won't hurt to say something once in a great while around here..

I am so excited for my trip.. I cannot wait to be influenced by all things France.  I think that design and inspiration are growing changing thing that we just have to take a moment to see.  I promise to share share as often as I can.

Have a wonderful weekend!

What a busy week with so many extraordinary events happening! The Royal Wedding was a day to remember ~ and speaking of weddings, today is our 17th wedding anniversary. We are not going to be riding in a carriage or flying out in a helicopter, but we will celebrate this day, just as we did 17 years ago.

fancy French rooftops

While the Normans are not generally known for their natural exuberance and eccentricity, they are partial to a little roof decoration.  I took these shots in our closest small town.  Sometimes it pays to walk around with your nose in the air!

bon weekend!

French patina and high ceilings

When I first saw pictures of this beautiful room in an 'hotel particulier', the light and muted colours just took my breath away.  Makes me long to unclutter, tone down and generally streamline my house life! !

Take a close look at the patina on the walls, I'm not convinced that even the most clever artist could achieve this look, just the right dose of superimposed and flaking paint - love it!

The overall effect is enhanced by the light streaming through the windows and the lack of furniture,  I would happily pass a little time here....
