How incredible and haunting are those photos? In 1971 in the village of Derweze, Turkmenistan there was a drilling accident where a massive underground natural gas cavern was punctured causing the ground to collapse and creating a hole of poisonous fumes. To minimalize the potential environmental catastrophe, geologists set the hole on fire but the crater hasn't stopped burning since. It's been over 40 years since that day!
