A Country Farmhouse

There is nothing more charming to me than a wonderful farmhouse. Old or new, I love the warmth and homey feeling!

I wanted to share this farmhouse from Rehkamp Larson Architects. When their clients purchased the property, the original farmhouse was in shambles. The owners envisioned a more modern, but classic styled foursquare farmhouse.

They wanted an expansive porch to wrap around the home to enjoy lovely views of the beautiful property.

Inside I fell in love with the old fashion styled farmhouse kitchen. Notice the large windows with mullions only on the top half. Also notice the huge wood center island. A bridge faucet and open shelving really helps capture the farmhouse style.

From this angle you can see the apron front sink. Another detail which really adds to the farmhouse feel are the exposed hinges on the inset cabinet doors, as well as the latches and bin pull hardware.

I adore this adjacent butler's pantry. Also notice the glass front cabinets and under cabinet shelf.

The bath is a wonderful reinterpretation of an old farmhouse bath. The slipper tub is sculptural and beautiful. The tile and high dressers also add a feeling of age and history.

Another favorite is the clapboard clad sunroom, outfitted with gas grill and hood. A great space for entertaining. Notice how the brick walls are complimented by the bright color palette. The colors really update and modernize the farmhouse feel.

The deep porch with beadboard ceiling creates a marvelous space for enjoying the vista. The very talented team at Rehkamp Larson Architects did an excellent job of creating a modern farmhouse for their client. To see more of their work click HERE.

Restored Farmhouse in Spain

Some of the old farmhouses of the historic region of Ampurdán, Girona, in Spain, have been rescued from oblivion by its current owners, lovers of the area. It is the case of this fourteenth century building, located in the center of Old Madremanya, which was completely restored respecting its original materials. A real beauty. Gorgeous farmhouse modern in Chicago

This home is a great example of how one can do a modern interior and still keep it warm. All of the lovely, dark hardwoods keep it cozy, but the hard edges and careful editing keep it very zen.

Love their entryway

A farmhouse table mixed with modern chairs keeps both rustic and modernity in check.

I'm a big fan of large mirrors leaning against the wall. It's luxurious but not stuffy.

Farmhouse in Malaga

Tradition and careful elegance cohabit in this old-style rural farmhouse located in Sierra de Ronda, Malaga, in Spain. It was quite run down when the owners, from England, bought it and transformed it into this relaxing and inviting home. I'm sure white on white lovers will rejoice. Come and take the tour!

Farmhouses in Napa Valley

Today, dear readers, we are going to have a look at two farmhouses, both in Napa Valley. The first one was built in the 1890s. Northern California-based architect Howard J. Backen renewed it and the interior design was in charge of Backen Gillam Architects.

Wide openings, screen porches and pocket doors are Backen trademarks.


A spacious kitchen and dining area at the rear of the rebuilt farmhouse. It has a screen porch that overlooks the pool area. Hundred-year-old wood from a barn in Eureka was used for the floors. Cabinetry conceals Sub-Zero refrigerator drawers.


Bare floors and quilted fabrics give the bedroom a casual feel.

And now we go on to have a look at the architect's own house also located in Napa Valley. This time the interiors were designed by his wife Lori O’Kane Backen.

Wicker chairs are to be seen in most of the rooms.

A chaise lounge and armchair facing the fireplace add to the comfort of the master bedroom. The rafters were left exposed as a nod to farmhouse architecture. An oversize window provides a stunning view.


Pocket doors—which remain open much of the year—separate the living area from the veranda. A set of pocket screens allows the area to be closed off from the outside as the weather dictates.


For the covered porch off the poolhouse, the couple paired a zinc table of the architect’s design with wicker chairs. .


The poolhouse, which doubles as a guesthouse, “shares the same architectural details as barns,” says Howard Backen. Sited a short distance below the main house, the structure also serves as his home office. “My daughter, Annie, and I draw together there,” he says.
