Change is good!

As we settle back into the house we lived in a few years ago, everyone expects that all of our things will go back to their original "place", and the house will look just as it did when we lived here before.  (This was never my plan.)  They question why the chairs that were in front of the fireplace are now near the sofa.  Weird.  I plan to keep pushing them out of their comfort zone by reinventing my house with most of the things I already have.  That means that paint will be the theme of this makeover, with a few new accessories and art pieces mixed in.

The first choice I made in  my family room was to bring in this vintage oriental rug that used to be in the guest bedroom.

I love the cozy feel it brings to the room but more importantly, this rug is bulletproof. This is our family room, where my kids will eat cheetos while watching tv and the the dogs will continue to debate who is boss.  This rug forgives it all!

Another plus for Oriental rugs - you can pull so many colors from them.  Normally I am drawn to light, muted colors, and I had planned to  paint the walls a soft, bluish-grayish green. I have reconsidered and  instead want my family room to be a cozy departure from the rest of my house, so my thought is to pull the rich peacock blue from the rug and put it on my walls.  This is a real departure for me - I usually go with something light and/or something green.  Is it weird to "cheat" on your favorite color?

Gorgeous peacock blue dining room from Suzanne Kasler (on a side-note, I had a dream last night that I met her at my mom's friend's house).  She was cool.

Peacock blue really shines with a lacquered finish (pun intended).

Looks so great with lots of white and a few accents of  hot pink...

and lemon yellow.

Toe-curling great!  Love the pink & yellow with it!

Have you cheated on any of your favorites lately?
