Open shelving keeps essentials in easy reach and creates a casual, friendly and open atmosphere. The downside is that because they can get covered in dust and grease they can be more difficult to keep clean and clutterfree. It also requires a bit more organization and careful editing to avoid looking like chaos. I love the tiled backsplash that goes all the way up the wall in this beach house designed by Tom Scheerer. The tiled wall is able to garner much more attention than had it been covered by cabinets.
The open shelving in this kitchen allows for additional storage space. Cabinets would have had to fit around the windows. Clear and white kitchen accoutrements keep the room simple and uncluttered.
This kitchen almost appears to be a pottery store. Sometimes "more is more" and the various elements blend together to create one cohesive accent wall.

Once again, I love the backsplash tiled all the way up to the ceiling keeping the wall clean and dramatic. The beautiful soft green subway tiles draw the eye in and take center stage over the various kitchen paraphenelia. Pots dangling on the rod hung precisely over the windows keeps the line running through the kitchen smooth and ties the windows together. Furthermore, it's another space saving feature.
