Tip of the day: "Stop feeding and pruning your roses around the end of August to discourage new growth that will suffer from Winter damage. Leave the last of the flowers on, to turn into hips. The hips are the roses seed pods. By producing seed pods, the rose bush thinks it's done for the season and can start to go dormant." source

Bright Ideas: How to Care for an Orchid
I was so excited to receive this elegant orchid from a friend for my birthday. It goes perfectly on my desk, and even coordinates with my watercolor painting on the wall. I did some research on how to care for an orchid, since {I am afraid to say} this is my very first one! Sonia Uyterhoeven, Gardener for Public Programs at the New York Botanical Garden, gives great watering and fertilizing tips.

In the Garden
I am so happy to get out in the garden. There is nothing more exciting than watching your own tomato of cucumber plant grow. I always have a container of basil and parsley as well. BHG has a list of 10 free vegetable garden plans here.
