An AMAZING home transformation

I'm jealous. Pure Style Home's Lauren Liess is only in her twenty something's and has her own interior design business, a family, and one adorable home! What's amazing is what she started out with only a year ago, and what she's turned it into. Check it out -

Nursery Reveal!

Back in April I posted some nursery inspiration photos for my friend Rebecca.  Well, Rebecca just had a beautiful baby boy, and he's lucky to have this great new nursery!  Rebecca used her creativity to do the entire project on a budget.  She painted her own artwork, built the mobile, and sewed the quilt, pillows, curtains, and pouf top herself.  She painted a dresser from craig's list, refinished the bookcase, and reused the crib her dad and grandfather had made for her older son.   Doesn't it look great!

Her fabric choices add so much color to the neutral background.  I LOVE the pouf and the quilt!

Hand-painted wall art, hand-sewn pillows, and the repainted bookcase make all the difference.

I love the grey, white, and orange together.

This started out as a mobile (using sticks from her backyard) but she decided to make a wall hanging instead. It looks great!

Her son made this in school and wanted his little baby brother to have it.

Nursery Color Board

Our friends are buying a house AND having a baby girl (congrats you two!). They've asked for some suggestions for the nursery, according to these guidelines:

1.  The crib, dresser, and changing table are black.
2.  They're moving a red bookcase into the room.
3.  They don't want too much pink.
4.  They're not into "the typical teddy bear borders and stuff like that".
5.  They want modern with a bit of traditional, to keep it comfortable.
6.  They want to incorporate a music theme.

Below are my thoughts regarding color schemes and patterns, to give us some direction.  (Click on any collage to view it larger.)  This first collage shows ideas to incorporate SOME pink without making it the main color. Pink and red can work together well, especially if cooler colors like light blue and pale green are used with them to tone down the look. I think the light blue or pale green would look great on the walls, accented by the pink and red in fabric and accessories.

4.  etsy apples & pears crib sheet (I believe this fabric is available at Jo-Ann Fabrics)
5.  Amy Butler Fabric swatch (not sure what it's called)
6.  Bella Baby Quilt from etsy

This next collage shows ideas for eliminating the pink altogether, yet still tying in the red from the bookcase. In this case, I still think the pale green walls would look great, or you could also look at a soft yellow.  Or, if you wanted it to look less cutesy and more modern you can just use white or light gray walls. I love the middle color swatch of Pear Green, Chili Pepper Red, and Peacock Blue from Benjamin Moore (Pear Green for walls). But I also love the Amy Butler fabric swatches and crib skirt design at the bottom that use only robin's egg blue, red, and white.

This next collage puts together some miscellaneous concepts. When it comes to the music theme, I suggest keeping it relatively simple. Rather than wall decals, I might recommend using frames for album covers, music posters, sheet music, or a collage of concert ticket stubs. And I KNOW you guys have a great graphic designer in the family who could do something wonderful that's music-related and worth framing, and will be much more meaningful. You could even just print out album covers in black and white and frame them in colorful frames. One of the images below also shows a vintage record player, which I think is a great touch.

2.  from Little Green Notebook (playful nursery design scheme with red)
3.  nursery from 6th Street Design School (frame gallery wall, vintage record player)

5.  from Sprout Gallery (crisp and fun red, blue, green color scheme with white backdrop)

Interior Designer Shannon Bowers

Today I'd like to show you a once-dark, two-story Georgian house transformed into a haven of pale European furnishings bathed in sunlight. Interior designer Shannon Bowers from Dallas, Texas, restored her house using colours found in nature like robin's egg blue, light sand and the lavender of hydrangeas.

In Shannon's words: "When we saw this house, I just loved it. But it was mauve with dark wood floors, and it had mini-blinds blocking out the sun. I wanted more natural light, airiness and a fresh new look."

Inspired by Swedish furniture as well as the light shades of flooring in many European homes, she found a linen with a blue undertone that dictated the colors of the interiors. "Often I'll pick one fabric, and it will determine the palette for an entire house. The wall colour is also a derivative of that fabric."

Complementing the Swedish pieces are numerous French antiques that exude a similar aesthetic. "Most of the French furniture is from the Directoire period, so the lines are very clean, and those pieces work well with our Swedish furnishings."

Bowers wanted a consistent look throughout the home. "If I have antiques in the living room, I think they should also appear in the children's spaces. I want to share them with my whole family. I would like for my children to develop an appreciation for them just as I have as the daughter of an interior designer."

Lots of antiques in the living room: Swedish 19th-c. cabinet and horse, a French 18th-c. chair in linen, Louis XVI chair near Louis XV limestone mantel and French 19th-c. bistro tables. Columns and lamps from 18thc., Gustavian sofa, accent pillows in vintage Fortuny fabric and a Swedish table, c.1750.

Gustavian settee and pillows in French muslin. A 19thc. Trumeau.

Swedish, Dutch and French styles combined: Swedish chair, c.1800, in muslin, a Dutch 18th-c. table and an antique French sculpture on wall. The Oushak rug is c.1920.

In the dining area, a garden statue and milk jar, both 19th-c. French. Antique tole and porcelain flowers in zinc pots.

Above the 18thc. sideboard, antique French ceiling panels as art. Handmade cloth pears in antique Swedish dough bowl and an Italian iron topiary.

In the kitchen an iron table with marble top, Belgian 19th-c. chairs and curtains in French linen. French charcuterie table, lantern and overdoor carving, all 19thc.

In the dining area, garden statue and milk jar, both 19th-c. French. A Mora clock, an antique tole and porcelain flowers in zinc pots.

Swedish 18th-c. library table with 19th- and 20th-c. Chinese jars. French light fixture and a pair of 19th-c. fauteuils in vintage Fortuny fabric.

In this sitting area a custom armchair and sofa, antique Swedish ottoman and Belgian armchair, pillows in French muslin and feedsack fabric, iron 19th-c. floor lamps, Louis XVI bergère in French linen. A custom cotton dhurrie on the whitewashed floor.

In the master bedroom linen slipcovers on headboard and footboard, an antique French table and seagrass carpet.

Lovely nursery with bedding in linen by Ralph Lauren. The mirror, French horse tricycle and Orkney child's chair are all antiques. The light fixture is a vintage French hot-air balloon. Custom cotton dhurrie.

Hope you enjoyed this tour. I have linked this post over at The Inspired Room, Friday Favourites and Furniture Feature Friday. Thanks for the parties Melissa and Jessica and Miss Mustard Seed!

Nursery Inspiration Photos

Before any of you get all crazy, this post is NOT for my own nursery - it's for my friend Rebecca.  Though after going through all of these photos, I have to confess that I'm excited for the day when I might get to design my own nursery (and fortunately I've still got a LOOOOONG time to think about it)!

Repeated elements within these photos (and elsewhere) that I LOVE:  yellow cribs, handmade mobiles, cutesy chandeliers.

Have fun with this Rebecca.  I can't wait to see what you end up doing!
