Beautiful Home Living ~ Black Banisters
Painting your banister is an attractive way to dress up your staircase. I mentioned in my "What Color is your Banister" post that we painted our banister (which leads up to the renovated third floor) a black lacquer with a shiny finish. The black color provides a nice contrast against the pastel walls. Here are the photos.

Offices in Closets & Small Spaces
from Paula Prass (love her colorful blog!)
A friend of mine lives in a great but tiny apartment with an incredible view of the city (if you call Salt Lake a city). She's considering turning a closet off the main living area into an office. I've seen some great office-to-closet conversions so I was excited for the chance to do a post for her.
A common theme in all these photos is the use of wall space. Whether it's shelves, fabric-covered bulletin boards, colorful clipboards, or peg board, don't forget how useful walls can be in areas where you don't have a lot of room for desktop space.
These old filing cabinets were given new life with spray paint.
source unknown (sorry anonymous lady with super fun office!)
Organization is key, and cardboard storage boxes can be a very inexpensive way to get organized.

I love the bulletin boards here, and the stacked drawer units.

A simpler desk space. The black & white look great, though there's not a lot of "hiding" space here.

The pegboard and floating shelves are functional, and I love the wallpaper on the back wall.

This photo isn't great, but I like the candy jars!

Another example of the of organizing with cardboard magazine boxes, which minimize clutter by hiding the various colors of magazine stacks.

from cnn.com
More beneficial bulletin boards and peg boards. The mirror is interesting too, though I'm not sold on it yet. I guess it probably gives that illusion of more space, but I'm hesitant to use mirrors in areas where it can also give the illusion of more clutter.

from Willow Decor
I love the clipboards and color here (had this image saved specifically for my own office). I'm guessing you can use wallpaper, fabric, or maybe scrapbooking paper to cover boring old clipboards.

source unknown
The picture ledges (I assume from Ikea) also make great ledges for office accessories. I love the chalkboard paint here too.

source unknown
I like the use of these canisters (or mailing tubes?) and an old shutter with binder clips for mail organization.
source unknown
For slightly larger spaces, the Ikea Expedit units are a great (and inexpensive) way to keep things organized.

Jen, I hope you're inspired. Let me know when the project starts - I want to help!

Art Studio / Home Office
I cannot tell you how happy I am that my new Art Studio is finished. Every morning the light pours in this bright and cheerful room and provides me with so much inspiration for the day! In the center of the room I created a custom island with wide shelves. I designed it specifically to store my watercolor paper which is 26" by 40". It is movable with casters on the bottom,
so I can place it anywhere in the room.
Remember this pegboard post? I created a large inspiration board to show my framed and unframed watercolors. I painted the pegboard the same Spring Mint color as the walls. Then I framed the pegboard with white trim for a finished look. This is the focal point of the room and the ultimate organizer.
The entire board measures 5 1/2 feet by 8 feet.
I use bull dog clips hanging on S hooks to display various works in progress.
Click here to see the wall before the renovation.
Over on the side of the room, I put in cabinets to store my supplies, with a dark teal/turquoise laminate top {which really looks like granite}.
In this post, I mentioned we were taking a trip to IKEA. My desk is made up of two Vika Artur trestles and a nice glass beveled edge top. I love my Jules swivel chair as well. Featured on the wall is my original watercolor dress painting.
Another IKEA purchase that holds and protects my prints is the Alex drawer unit on casters. On top I have my new Hp wireless scanner and copier which I love. I picked a beautiful light wood flooring. This cleans well {in case I spill some paint} and is functional with all the movable furniture in the room.
I am big on organization. The fabric bins on my desk come from
Momfetti and Target.
My best-selling "Summer Breeze" giclee on canvas brings color to the room. These are great to place in a stand on your favorite table, or hang on the wall.
Thank you for coming by!

Organizing Tips
It is almost 2010, and you know what that means...
Time to Get Organized.
I need to see what is important; therefore, using wall space is a must.
If presented in the right way, your organizers
become part of the room's design and decor.

I love wire baskets ~~ you can see what is inside!

than putting your ideas in the drawer
{where you will forget about them}

Instead of throwing your ribbon and thread in a box, I love this DIY ribbon organizer to see what you have!

The most interesting room in the world
So I had a reader come to me with a really fun request -
"Have you seen those Dos Equis commercials, about 'the most intersting man in the world?'
I have a library that I'd like to decorate like that - leather, skeletons, artifacts, books - and I was wondering if you could do a blog post on rooms that have that sort of 'worldly' look." -V
In case you're not sure about the ad she mentions - you can watch it here.
Here is a shot from the ad and two photos I found on the Dos Equis website.

Here are some images I dug up to provide some more ideas and inspiration for achieving that old-world, well traveled look.
This library is very similar because of the stone fireplace and rich upholstery and fabrics. Notice also a globe, stacks of old books, and the scientific painting of the skull.

Maps are an easy way to accomplish an worldly look, also they are affordable and widely available. You could even go to a used bookstore and find maps in books to cut out and display.

Notice that in all of the rooms that dark walls instantly create a sense of intrigue. Also - keep in mind that most objects should not match -or come as a set. Curiosities and artifacts are gathered overtime from different places. You'll have different textures and colors in your fabrics, furniture, and objects.
An academic atmosphere also contributes to a worldly look - journals, good illumination, and organized collections.

Classic architectural sketches are also a nice touch - and can be found in flea markets and bookstores - even better if from your travels!

A faux stucco plaster treatment is a gorgeous way to create an antiquated look.

Turn to libraries and museums for ideas.
Specimen drawers, apothecary jars, and specimen mounts are all ways to give your objects an "interesting" look. You can find these supplies at specimen and lab suppliers.

Thanks Victoria for a great idea! Does anyone else have some tips or ideas?
