First, you should look around to see what you like. I have several artists in mind that I would love to have commissioned pieces from. Unfortunately, we have a long list of things we want to accomplish and finish with the house this year commissioned artwork is not on that list.
I am a fan of Amanda Talley and I know that many of you who read are fans as well. I found this piece that was commissioned for one of Erin's clients from Elements of Style. I remember the first time that I saw it, I was smitten with it immediately. It looks like this particular piece is painted on art paper and framed behind glass.
Here is what I came up with....
I bought a large canvas from Michael's and used some leftover paint from other projects. I know that my piece does not look exactly like the original and that is how I wanted it. This is inspired by Amanda's piece.
I liked how the curves of the light fixture mimic the movement in the art piece and the weathered gray finish complements the tones in picture.
The lemon prints on the opposite wall have a little hint of pint. I liked adding a little pink into the painting, but not matching the colors exactly. I didn't want it to look too matchy.
I like the movement of the circles and scrolls against the trellis fabric print.
Overall, I think the scale of the artwork is complementary to the large framed prints on the opposite wall. I think the piece is really fun and a bit unexpected and that is why I like it. I don't think my husband likes it as much as I do, but I think he will warm up to it...fingers crossed. If and when I tire of looking at it, I can just paint the canvas white and start over. I commissioned myself it seems and I will do it again. I already have my eye on the next masterpiece...ha ha!
